Change Out Your Mattress

If you haven’t purchased a new mattress in a long time, you might want to consider doing so. It is recommended that you change out your mattress every seven to ten years, but that isn’t the only reason you should seriously think about buying a new one. Often times, the mattresses we sleep on aren’t the right type for optimal sleep. Mattresses that are too soft may be comfortable, but they don’t provide your body with the support it needs. While firm mattresses have ample support, they may not be comfortable enough to keep you soundly asleep throughout the night. Look for one in between the two!

Control Light and Temperature

While you are probably used to falling asleep in a variety of different light and temperature levels, these two things can lead to disturbed sleep if they aren’t regulated. When picking a bedroom temperature, make sure to pick one that will help you stay comfortable throughout the night. Everyone is different, so some may like it warmer than others at night. As far as light goes, the less light, the better. Make sure to draw your blinds before crawling into bed, and if that doesn’t block out all the light, consider purchasing a sleep mask from a local department store. This simple investment will have you sleeping more soundly in no time!

Put Away the Screens

Bringing smartphones and tablets into bed has become commonplace, but it’s not a good choice for your sleep health. Screens emit blue light, and being exposed to that light before sleeping will lead to disturbed sleep and a harder time falling asleep in the first place. Set a goal to put your handheld screens away at least an hour before bed for optimal sleep.

Create a Pre-bedtime Ritual

You probably have a pretty consistent routine in the morning, but what about at night? Implementing a pre-bedtime ritual that you do every night, whether it’s sipping a cup of soothing tea or reading by lamplight or meditating, will signal to your body that it is time to wind down, and it will help you fall asleep more quickly.
